What you’ll learn

HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting equips participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively to first aid emergencies involving infants and children. The course aligns with guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other national peak clinical bodies. It is particularly relevant for educators and support staff working within early childhood education and care settings, including those in outside school hours care and vacation programs. Participants will learn to: Recognize and assess emergency situations. Ensure safety for themselves, bystanders, and casualties. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on infants, children, and adults. Provide first aid for various conditions, such as anaphylaxis, asthma, bleeding, choking, envenomation, fractures, and shock. Communicate details of incidents effectively to emergency services and caregivers. Review incidents and understand the psychological impacts on rescuers and children. This unit may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma, and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

Entry Requirements

Additional Requirement for this short Course.

There are no formal prerequisites for enrolling in HLTAID012. However, to successfully participate in and complete this First Aid course, learners must be able to meet the following physical and practical requirements: 1. Perform CPR on the floor for a minimum required time on a manikin (as per national assessment guidelines). 2. Bend, kneel, and lie on the floor, and get up without assistance, during simulated emergency response scenarios. 3. Use both hands and arms to demonstrate pressure application, bandaging, and the use of medical equipment. 4. Demonstrate safe manual handling practices when simulating casualty movement or support. 5. Basic reading and comprehension – to understand written instructions, course materials, and safety information 6. Basic writing skills – To write brief incident notes or reports 7. Basic numeracy skills – such as counting, measuring, or interpreting simple data relevant to the course 8. Basic digital literacy – including the ability to use a computer or tablet, access online resources, and operate common software or learning platforms (as applicable) Please note: These requirements are essential for achieving competency. If you have any physical limitations, injuries, or health concerns that may impact your ability to perform these tasks, please notify the training provider before enrolling. Reasonable adjustments may be considered where possible, but core physical tasks such as CPR on the floor cannot be adjusted due to national training standards. Learners who are concerned about their LLN&D abilities are encouraged to speak with our staff for further guidance or support options prior to enrolling.
